ESG reporting for SMEs, without the corporate machine

ESG reporting has a reputation for being heavy, expensive, and built for big companies. For an SME it does not have to be. There is a proportionate standard, and a way to produce a report in an afternoon rather than a quarter.

ESG stands for environmental, social, and governance. For a large listed company, ESG reporting is a major exercise. For a small business being asked by a bank or a customer, the right scope is far smaller, and reaching for the full corporate framework wastes time you do not have.

The proportionate standard is VSME

The sensible ESG report for an SME is a VSME Basic Module report. It covers the environmental side (energy, emissions, water, waste, biodiversity), the social side (workforce, health and safety, pay, training), and the governance side (corruption and bribery). That is ESG, sized for a smaller firm, in eleven compact blocks.

You do not need a bespoke ESG framework. VSME already maps ESG onto datapoints a small business can realistically report.

What banks and customers actually want

They are not grading your prose. They want structured, comparable figures they can feed into their own reporting: how much energy you use, your emissions, your headcount and safety record, your governance basics. A clean report in the VSME shape gives them exactly that, and gives you a document you can reuse for the next request.

Keep it honest

Good SME ESG reporting is honest about gaps. If you do not yet measure Scope 2 emissions, say so and show it as a gap to close, rather than inventing a number. A report that is transparent about what is missing is more credible than one that papers over holes, and it gives you a plan for next year.

Common questions

Do SMEs legally have to do ESG reporting?

Usually not directly. The pressure comes from banks and customers asking for data. VSME is the proportionate standard for answering them.

Is a VSME report the same as an ESG report for an SME?

In practice, yes. VSME covers environmental, social, and governance topics in a format sized for smaller companies.
